After seeing a presentation Pedram Shojai gave at a conference, I had to look further into his work. His book did not disappoint! Dr. Shojai gives practical suggestions for finding and enhancing your inner vitality here and now in the real world, rather than having to travel to the far east and live as a monk for a few years (as he did). I truly appreciate that he advocates using your energy and vitality to make the world a better place.Dr. Shojai has online resources to augment the material in the book, too. I have found the guides, recipes, and videos very helpful in finding my "inner zen." I feel like I am truly on my way to becoming an Urban Monk, too, and I don't have to quit my day job to do it!
I have read the book twice now. After the first reading, I got a few practical tips on how to re-prioritize my life to accomplish the things that are truly important to me. But the real breakthroughs happened when I did the Qi Gong exercises he posted online in the resources. Once I did those daily, I noticed immediately that I was calmer and had less stress each day. After a month I had gone from having daily high anxiety to zero anxiety. I am not exaggerating. The people whose stories he describes in each chapter will be familiar to you because they are how virtually everyone lives their lives. Those people improved as well, by also doing the work Pedram gave them. Doing work is not popular advice, so if you are likely to read the book and move on without even attempting the exercises or the changes he suggests, you probably won't get much from it. But if you do the work, you will notice real improvements in your health life. If you think you don't have time to add these exercises to your busy life, the great news is Pedram gives you tons of practical advice to be more productive throughout your day. Once you make those changes, you will have 15 minutes daily for some Qi Gong.After reading the book the second time, I committed to trying even more of the exercises, and I realized there is significant wisdom in this book. Much more than was apparent the first time through. The exercises such as rooting energy down through the earth or heart meditation may seem simple, but they work wonders as well. Do not skip over those.Highly recommended.
I love this book. I wish I simply could get you to buy it and trust me on this instead of having to write a long review about all the simple, yet life changing things it has taught me. Since reading this book I have drastically cut down my coffee consumption and started drinking teas that I have never heard of before. I am much calmer and more focused when I drink the teas as compared to when I drink the coffees. I have started to do some weird exercises that you can watch on the internet by doing a search of the Urban Monk. I couldn't stop reading it. Even when I was tired I wanted to get to the end of the book so I could at least do the exercises. Everything in this book is easy to do and can change the way you feel. So if you want to improve your life and the life of everyone around you, I suggest buying this, doing the exercises, and buying extra copies for your friends.
This book is like Navy Seal training for everyday life. If you are looking for another "warm and fuzzy" hand holding self help book, you might want to skip this one. Pedram is blunt and obviously knows his stuff. Some argue that the information in this book is nothing new, I disagree, but even so it is sometimes the delivery method that hits home. I challenge you to not find anything in this book that you can not relate to, especially if there are things in your life that don't seem to be working. Get with the program, get off your ass, read the book, do the work...watch your life change, for the better.
This has become one of my go to books that I will read and reference over and over again for years to come. It is chockfull of Eastern practices and information all geared toward reducing stress and cultivating quiet and space in your life. I absolutely love it! It's a great intro to various Eastern practices, such as Qigong, Tai Chi, Yin Yoga. It inspired me to delve deeper into those subjects as well as more of the spiritual aspects of Yoga.
Gosh this was a really great book tying in so many practices that will enhance anyone's life. While many were already part of my routine, I found new ones, and validation of those I've already implemented. I think that anyone feeling overwhelmed, lost or simply wanting to try to connect a bit more will find the information in this book useful, easy to implement, and life-changing for the better. All encompasing as it touches on just about any aspect of life that we have all found ourselves wondering if we couldn't do it better, wish we could do it better, not know how to do it better... Just helpful, telling it like it is advice to kick it up a few notches.
One of the best books I have ever sunk myself into... I proudly vote with my dollar and absolutely support Pedram Shojai as being one of the emerging leaders in wellness. The book is a reference guide to having an amazing life- so many great nuggets of information to absorb. I wrote in mine, took notes, circled ideas, and using it as my workbook for managing and better understanding of how to live balancing stress. Highly recommend this book which has great advice for modern life to surmount obstacle for peaceful and healthy living. Each chapter starts with a real person whose life is messed up because of some unhealthy habit .He then proceeds with detailed discussion as to how we have damaged our health by deviating far from nature and how our ancestors lived. He then outlines steps to regain your health back by simple things which closely might mimic what our forefathers did. And then each chapter ends with solution for the particular person who was mentioned at start of chapter. So all chapters have this format discussing diet, sleep, exercise , being close to nature etc. A truly great book.
