I recently launched my own business and this book has been a valuable tool, not only for my marketing efforts, but even for the way I approach my business. I have general understanding of marketing, but the SEO Battlefield really helps to break things down into understandable topics. Many books about the news rules for marketing and growth hacking are heavy on homily, but lack any practical discussion - this was a refreshing change of pace. The author provides pragmatic advice for aspiring marketers and presents it in her own voice, which keeps the content fresh. Experienced SEOs may find themselves well-versed in this topic, but for a neophyte like myself this is a wealth of information.

This is another solid book from O'Reilly.The author gives a good overview of the areas that a digital marketer must consider when creating content for the web. It's a BIG topic, but the author did a good job of keeping it entertaining and accessible.I would suggest using this to get an understanding of the big picture surrounding SEO so that you can feel a bit more confident the next time you create content or launch a campaign.

I'm thrilled to finally have a copy of this book, not only because it's an entertaining and informative read, but because it finally takes from her brain to paper information from one of the smartest digital marketers I've ever met.Anne has been operating online professionally since pre-web, and her digital-native knowledge shines through in this tome.Her approach to marketing has always been results-oriented and data-driven, and her advice in this book reflects that.

For someone like me that has a general understanding of SEO but is far from proficient, not to mention expert, I found this book interesting, and easy to read. The case studies were particularly helpful in grasping the concepts and approaches. It's difficult to write for the wide range of experience and expertise with this important, complicated and often esoteric subject. I doubt experts will take a lot away from this but for beginners and generalist interested in the subject - I think it offers some great insight and takeaways.

A detailed forward looking approach to building search programs. A must read for search pros and beginners alike. I really liked the campaign ideas and the chapter about the future. Kinda blew my mind.

I'm about a qaurter of a way through the book and it's an excruciating read. I was hoping for "winning strategies" and instead it seems like a mashup of a general overview of SEO and repetitive statements about how it's good to keep learning... Ugh. I hope it gets better. I'm already skipping around to try and find something I didn't already know.If I can finish this book, I'll update my review.I gave it 2 stars because the writer seems smart - but wow this book needed a good edit once over and a more accurate title like "Overivew of SEO with Some Ideas"

Okay, this is one of those book that is so good, it remains worth reading despite the author’s terrible writing style. Anne Ahold Ward definitely knows her stuff when it comes to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), but she is a poor writer and didn’t have a good editor. It might have been George Orwell who wrote some rules for writers many decades ago, among which rules was a warning to use foreign language or jargon. Well, Ms. Ward doesn’t use foreign language, but she is up to her ears in jargon. I found myself resorting often to the book’s index (which is quite good) or Google’s “define:” function. Too often. I appreciate concise writing, but the feeling I got here was of a seminar presenter or college instructor trying to cram all they know into an hour – or of someone pitching their agency’s brilliance and prowess to a committee or board with limited time, patience and interest. Not coincidentally, Ward is a “Growth Scientist and CEO of CircleClick Media, a leading digital agency and marketing lab in the Bay Area. She is also a self-proclaimed Futurist. All that said, Ms. Ward has turned out one heck of an informative book worth the patience required to read it. The title may be unintentionally misleading. In the second paragraph of the Preface, Ms. Ward warns “If you’ve never really heard of SEO and have no marketing or technical experience, then you may want to read other . . . books on these topics first. Absolutely. Because Ms. Ward launches into a whirlwind tour de force of Search Engine Optimization in its every aspect. I am amazed she packed so much information into so few pages. Some of the examples and case histories are fascinating, like how the author turned lemons into lemonade with a rental house she owns in Austin TX, site of SXSW. She truly covers a broad swath of territory, including things like crowdfunding and YouTube SEO. Despite her writing style, I intend to read this a second time because I learned a lot and I know I missed a lot. Final analysis. Not for beginners. Author’s style and excessive use of jargon makes for a difficult read. But packed with useful and usable information.Jerry

This book offers a relatively quick overview of the current search engine optimization world. Ward provides a surprisingly conversational approach, a little like if she was in a small seminar rather than writing a text. There's a lot of material here, running the gamut from meta-strategy to specific site and tool suggestions. For someone relatively new to the discussion or someone who hasn't paid attention to it for a while, this really is an ideal book to get you up to speed on issues, areas to focus on, and overall techniques. Worthwhile for anyone wanting to get their website more clicks and attention as quick as possible.
