This text was used in my graduate electrical engineering course on gas breakdown physics offered at my school (a major U.S. technical university). The fundamentals of electron / ion generation in various electric field configurations and pressure conditions are covered in analytical detail, including all of the essential breakdown mechanisms which have been studied in literature. Also included is a great deal of experimental data useful for practical laboratory experiments with plasmas. The text is written at a level which should be useful for early graduate students in engineering or physics (beyond the level of F. Chen, Introduction to Plasma Physics), although it comes easier depending on the student's background in plasma physics, statistical mechanics, or circuit theory. This book covers essentially the same material as the much older text by E. Nasser (Fundamentals of Gaseous Ionization and Plasma Electronics), but is much cheaper (<$100) and covers some more modern topics, such as using plasma discharges as light sources in high power gas lasers.My doctoral dissertation was in the area of fast plasma generation physics at atmospheric pressures via the spark discharge, and I actually found this text to be more useful as a reference on the fundamental equations of electron generation than the authors own book on the subject (Y. Raizer, Spark Discharge). I now work as a pulsed power / plasma scientist at a major U.S. national laboratory, and I still use this text almost daily as a reference in my research.I would have given the book five stars except that there are a number of small typos throughout the original (1997) text, and it appears that the publisher did not update these errors when reprinting the current (2011) version of this book. However, these typos do not detract from understanding the content presented in the text.I highly recommend this text to any electrical engineering or physics student who is interested in learning the fundamentals of gas breakdown phenomena.
