Bob Fosse (1927-1987) is recognized as one of the most significant figures in post-World War II American musical theater. With his first Broadway musical, The Pajama Game, in 1954, the "Fosse style" was already fully developed, with its trademark hunched shoulders, turned-in stance, and stuttering, staccato jazz movements. Fosse moved decisively into the role of director with Redhead in 1959 and was a key figure in the rise of the director-choreographer in the Broadway musical. He also became the only star director of musicals of his era - a group that included Jerome Robbins, Gower Champion, Michael Kidd, and Harold Prince - to equal his Broadway success in films.
Following his unprecedented triple crown of show business awards in 1973 (an Oscar for Cabaret, Emmy for Liza with a Z, and Tony for Pippin), Fosse assumed complete control of virtually every element of his projects. But when at last he had achieved complete autonomy, his final efforts, the film Star 80 and the musical Big Deal, written and directed by Fosse, were rejected by audiences and critics.
A fascinating look at the evolution of Fosse as choreographer and director, Big Deal: Bob Fosse and Dance in the American Musical considers Fosse's career in the context of changes in the Broadway musical theater over four decades.

Brilliant book on Bob Fosse by Kevin Winkler! I am enthralled reading it and viewing historical photos of Bob's early life and detailed work. There have been 2 other excellent books published on Fosse, but this, "Big Deal...Bob Fosse And Dance in the American Musical", in my opinion (AND as an original Fosse talent as well), is The Bible of the evolution of Fosse's work as great choreographer & director! Kudos to Broadway Legacies & Oxford University Press as well!- believing in this tremendous work/result by Kevin Winkler! Thank you! Cheryl Clark ***Broadway dancer/singer/actress xo
The best part of this book is that the author knows enough about dance to talk about Bob Fosse in terms of his contribution to dance. I really liked Mr. Winkler's input. He identifies Fosse contributions such as the "amoeba" and "unit of three" dance units. But he also points out where Fosse derived some things such as the movements in Steam Heat. Still the book is a biography and some of it is gossipy. Perversely, I enjoyed that too. It grounds Fosse in relationship to his time. I became aware of Fosse's dislike of wigs throughout his life which led to his signature hats. His youth in burlesque led to his inclusion of sexuality in his choreography. Fosse always fought for control of his products but he succeeded the most when he did not have that complete control. And most sadly, Fosse wanted to dance himself throughout his life. He was fantastic but he did not have the time and sometimes the talent to compete with the dancers he put in his own productions.
I have an interest of who, what, when or how (and why, of course) and this well-facted and studied and lived with the subject matter author knows what he is writing about. his style is comfortable and a pleasure to read. he inhaled the subjects every step and lays it out for you to live it in your head. saw most of fosse's creations. he learned from the best and used it all in his own magical way. I liked this book very, very much and hope you do too. enjoy.
I worked with Mr. Fosse in two shows during the golden age of Broadway, the 1960's; How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, two national tours, and the original production of Sweet Charity, starring Gwen Verdon. Not just a bio of his personal life, the details of his work history and immense influence and contribution to the American Musical Theatre is well-documented and the bio, a terrific read for anyone interested in theatre and Broadway history!
Fascinating history of a complex dancer, director and human being. Good use of archival material, particularly dealing with Gwen Verdon. Lots of dancing terms (written by a former dancer) but still readable.
Winkler breaks down Bob Fosse’s choreography thru his early experience in vaudeville as a kid to his award winning movies and Broadway plays. Not a biography of the man, rather a biography of his work.
It was just a good read with some great insights into Fosse. He was a genius.
BIG DEAL examines Bob Fosse's four-decade career as one of the brightest lights in Broadway musical theater as a choreographer and director. Kevin Winkler, a former dancer and New York Public Library archivist, conducted interviews with dozens of dancers who worked with Fosse (1927-1987) on stage and screen. He also uses the personal papers of Fosse and wife Gwen Verdon to construct an amazingly exhaustive, intimate and riveting career biography of his subject. As a teen, Fosse performed in vaudeville, nightclubs and burlesque houses. A film contract with MGM led to appearing in and choreographing musicals on Broadway. Winkler looks at all of Fosse's work on stage (including Pajama Game, Damn Yankees, Sweet Charity, Chicago), film (Cabaret, All That Jazz) and TV specials. He assesses each musical number from each production and analyzes how Fosse's aesthetic changed over the decades. BIG DEAL focuses on the director's work life--and he was a true workaholic. In 1973, he won the show business triple crown: an Oscar for Cabaret, a Tony for Pippin and an Emmy for Liza with a Z. "The only salvation for me is work--just to keep rehearsing," Fosse said. "Only then do I experience absolute happiness." There's still plenty of juicy backstage gossip (Fosse's bitter battles with Pippin's composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz; his brief tenure directing Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl after producers fired Jerome Robbins).BIG DEAL is an authoritative, passionately written and essential reference guide to all of Bob Fosse's musical numbers. Musical theater fans will tip their hats (Fosse-style) to this affectionate and energetic tribute.BIG DEAL scrutinizes all of Bob Fosse's musical numbers in this passionate, intimate overview of his four-decade career on Broadway and in films.
